FlowJo Site License for Emory

Table of Contents

Overview

Emory has a site license for FlowJo. Currently, we are allowed to install FlowJo on an unlimited number of computers that are directly connected to the Emory Ethernet; this includes desktop computers and laptops. In addition, we have been assigned 20 licenses for laptop computers that allows them to use FlowJo when not connected to the Emory Ethernet; these were assigned on a first come-first served basis, and as of this time, no more are available.

Upgrade to FlowJo version 6.0

I encourage everyone to upgrade to the latest version of FlowJo, available at the TreeStar/FlowJo website. Some of you have reported that old workspaces that are opened in the new version of FlowJo sometimes behave oddly. Please report these bugs directly to FlowJo.

Computers connected to the Emory Ethernet

If your computer is connected directly to the Emory Ethernet, then you will probably have IP numbers beginning with either 170.140 or 163.246.

I don't understand why, but in my experience simply copying the numbers from the table below and pasting them into the FlowJo dialog box for serial numbers doesn't work (perhaps an extra character is appended to the copy operation, I don't know). If this doesn't work for you, just retype the numbers.

The serial numbers for FlowJo Version 6.0 and above are:

For FlowJo Version 6.x

IP Number Begins Wtih FlowJo License Number Expires
170.140 n1wvyvsfyq1eaLUy 7/13/05
163.246 p5rVypijkNRTbMyj 7/13/05

The serial numbers for version 6.0 should work for version 4.6 as well, though I haven't verified that.

Juse in case, TreeStar has issued additional serial numbers for versions 4.x. I'm not sure which serial number works with which IP range -- try them both.

For FlowJo Version 4.x

IP Number Begins Wtih FlowJo License Number Expires

170.140

or

163.246

g1rL7BEDdBPdJrhE

or

nt2nwYCxRFFnf6LT

8/3/05

The numbers in the table below are old serial numbers for FlowJo versions through 4.61, and should have expired.

Expired Numbers For FlowJo Version 4.x

IP Number Begins Wtih FlowJo License Number Expires
170.140 f3sP1m2mVv144May 8/3/04
163.246 epuD1UJ7K1fjnaLr 8/19/04

If you are having trouble with these numbers, make sure that when you enter them in the FlowJo serial number dialog box, that you do not have spaces before or after the serial number.

Finally, your computer must be attached to the network for these serial numbers to work, and you must have a valid Emory IP number, which can be either a static IP address or one obtained from a DHCP server.

Really finally, please note that in the last quarter of 2004, TreeStar hopes to introduce a new site-license validation method that is based upon hardware serial numbers. While this will make my life a little more difficult, it should remove the restrictions that we have on the number of laptop licenses.

Potential Problems with Airport

Versions of FlowJo prior to 4.5 might have caused some problems on computers with wireless Airport capabilities. In versions of FlowJo up to 4.4.3, you must turn off Airport functions, and this must be done in the Network Preferences panel of the System Preferences. It is not sufficient to turn off the AirPort from the menu bar. But I recommend upgrading to FlowJo 4.5; in 4.5, this bug has been eradicated.

Laptop Licences

If you would like to run FlowJo on a laptop that is not directly connected to the Emory Ethernet (though, as noted above, we are currently out of our allocated licenses), you will need a FlowJo license that is tied to the "Hardware Serial Number" of your computer; the hardware serial number for every computer in the world is unique, and is tied to the Ethernet card of that computer.

You can find the hardware serial number for your computer by opening the application "Apple System Profiler", which is found in the Utiliities subfolder of the Applications folder (on computers running Mac OS 10.x); you can also select "About This Mac" from the Apple menu, and then hit the "More Info..." button. When you originally open Apple System Profiler in System 10.2x, you should see a screen something like the following:

If the System Profile tab is not active, click on it. Towards the bottom of the window, you should see a section titled "Network Overview"; the number of subsections to this section will depend upon the hardware configuration. In the example above, there is one section for an AirPort card in SLOT-B, and the Ethernet Address in the "Built-in" section. It is the number in the "Built-in" section that is used by FlowJo. I've highlighted it in red in the figure above.

The appearance of the System Profiler in 10.3 is a little different:

Here, you need to first click on the Network line in the Contents list (item 1 above), then click on the "Built-in Ethernet" line in the Configuration table (item 2 above). This will give you a list of parameters, including the Hardware Ethernet Address (item 3 above).
