Dr. Mocarski studies the replication, latency and host response to herpesviruses, specializing in cytomegalovirus, an important opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. Dr. Mocarski, together with many students and postdoctoral fellows, has made significant discoveries into how cytomegaloviruses regulate gene expression, replicate their genomes, mature and spread during replication. He has explored the pathogen:host stand-off, investigating immunomodulatory viral functions as well as the properties of latency and reactivation that are central to viral pathogenesis. With collaborators, he has investigated chronic disease complications of cytomegalovirus infections. Dr. Mocarski’s research has yielded targets for anti-viral therapies as well as information critical to vaccine initiatives.
